Athletes qualify for Summer Games and High School Provincials

The East Kootenay Track & Field Club (EKTFC) now entering into its third season has just wrapped up a very successful spring with some impressive results.

Athletes from the club traveled to Trail for the West Kootenay Zone 1 BC Summer Games Trials, which were held in conjunction with the Royal Canadian Legion track meet on Saturday, May 3. This year’s event attracted 140 athletes, which was a record attendance in the 13 years that the event has been hosted.

Athletes must have placed first or second in order to qualify. Of the seven athletes who were eligible to earn a spot on the team – five athletes from EKTFC have qualified for the BC Summer Games, which will be held in Nanaimo, July 17-20.

Sarah Andreas – Pentathlon: 2nd place
Justin Marsh – Pentathlon: 1st place
Samara Schiefner – 100m: 1st place; 200m: 1st place; Long Jump: 2nd place
Emma Murtagh – Long Jump: 1st place; 200m: 2nd place; 1200m: 1st place
Jacob Sebben – 300m: 1st place; Javelin Throw: 1st place

Athletes from the club also competed at the East-West Kootenay High School Track Meet on Thursday, May 15, which was held at the College of the Rockies track. This was a qualifier for the BC High School Track and Field Championships, which were held in Langley on May 29-31.

There were 11 schools from the East Kootenay region; 170 athletes who participated in over 440 events.

Sparwood Secondary School won the overall school championship, Parkland Middle School placed third and Mount Baker Secondary placed fifth.

The highest percentage of top three finishers was Mount Baker at 85% with all their athletes working with Coach James O’Kane of the EKTFC.

Mt. Baker with 85% top three finishers was followed by Prince Charles Secondary with 78% and Parkland with 75%. Mount Baker swept the senior 100 and 400 m relays to a small but loud home crowd!
