Bad ice moves Family Fun Derby back to Fort Steele

Same day, same games, same prizes, same fun for the entire family, and same worthy cause, just a different location.

Family Fun DerbyDue to another year of variable weather and uncertain ice conditions, JCI Kootenay has decided to move the Family Fun Derby event to Fort Steele Heritage Town.

The JCI Kootenay derby organizing team visited Horseshoe Lake recently and although the ice may be adequate for a person to walk on, it was not near the thickness required for the very large groups of people and infrastructure that comes with the event.

“It’s not a fun decision to make,” said Derby Marketing and Communications lead Mike Matejka. “However, the safety of the participants and the desire to guarantee an event that will raise money for kids with cancer makes it an easier choice. We have to action our backup plan with enough lead time, and we can’t take into account weather forecasts that may or may not improve the ice situation.”
