Sparwood Secondary School recently held the East Kootenay Championships for the Girls’ Bantam Basketball.

The games started on Friday afternoon, with teams from around the East Kootenay, including Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, Jaffray, Cranbrook and Creston.

All games were intense. After fierce plays, sprained fingers and a couple wrestling matches to get the ball the standings were as follows: fourth place to Laurie Middle School of Cranbrook; third went to Creston; second place went to Cranbrook’s Parkland Middle School; and first place went to Jaffray Junior Secondary School.

I asked, Lorne Cook, coach of the Sparwood Bantam girls team what he thought of this season and he said this was the first year in his history of coaching Sparwood Bantam girls that he didn’t have one standout ringer. You know the girl that everyone passes the ball off to?

This team was actually working together as a team of to make baskets. He also said this has been the biggest parent support group he has ever seen. The parents showed up to all games and there was a large core that travelled to the out of town tournaments. Our at home games had the largest turnouts that included not only parents but Grandparents and other relatives and friends.

After the last game this team played together one of the grandparents turned to me and said she wished this team including the coach could move up together.

Everyone from the coach to the parents to the kids all worked well together. It’s sad to see the Bantam girls Basketball 2015-2016 season come to and end.
