Warriors Challenge Weekend a success

The first Kootenay Warriors Spring Hockey Challenge is in the books and by all accounts was a tremendous success.

Warriors 1“It was a fantastic weekend,” says Corey Spring, one of the Warriors Program organizers. “Things kicked off on Friday night with some exciting end to end hockey that continued right through Sunday. Beyond the on-ice action, we had great spectators, and the out of town teams had many positive comments about the Warriors Challenge and the hospitality they received from city businesses during their stay.”

Warriors 2The Kootenay Warriors Spring Hockey Program is in its first year and has three divisions: 2004, 2005 and 2006 featuring the best players born in these three years. Over the weekend, the 2004 and 2005 teams had exhibition games against the 2004 and 2005 Southern Alberta Battle teams and the 2006 Warriors played host to a full four-team tournament.

Warriors 3“The 2006 tournament featured the West Kootenay Avalanche, Okanagan All Stars, Southern Alberta Battle and our host ‘06 Warriors,” added Spring. “The Warriors had some terrific games and ended the weekend with third place 2-1-1 record, while the West Kootenay Avalanche took second and the Okanagan All Stars finished in first.”

Warriors 4Program organizers received a lot of positive feedback over the course of the weekend and are very grateful to the many volunteers and sponsors who made the event such a success. “We would like to sincerely thank the volunteers and the business community for supporting us. This is a new program and its success relies on the support we receive from parents and the community, so we are very grateful to everyone who contributed through the donation of gifts, sponsorship, or by volunteering their time,” says Spring.

The Kootenay Warriors Program mission is to nurture individual and team hockey skill development, enhance character and life skills and provide exceptional coaching and structure. For more information on the program, visit www.kootenaywarriors.ca.
