April in the East Kootenay

By Ian Cobb

Awake, thou wintry earth -

Fling off thy sadness!

Fair vernal flowers, laugh forth

Your ancient gladness!

~Thomas Blackburn; An Easter Hymn

April in the East Kootenay is a time of joy.

Longer days have warmed the mountains, melting most of the valley snow and ice. The sun becomes warm on the face and the forests, wetlands and grasslands become noisy from returning birds and emerging critters.

Fewer elk lurk near the sides of highways, still void of the weekend rubber tire mania emanating from the cold side of the Rockies. And with each passing day, the glory that is the long light of spring spreads out, bringing sweet sunrises and savory sunsets.

April is the month when the photographer within re-awakens, inspired by the greater accessibility to our wondrous backcountry.

This month’s collection of images features a crack at the blood moon and a small look at the recent prescribed burn at Brewery Ridge, and a sunny afternoon ramble around Bummer Flats, near Fort Steele. Other images are from shoots at: Cranbrook and area; Kimberley and area; Picture Valley; Elkford; Jaffray/Koocanusa area; Sparwood; Tie Lake; Wardner and Windermere.
