Autumnal Equinox at 3:05 a.m.
The slow descent to yellows, oranges, reds and browns has begun and by 3:05 a.m. tomorrow (Sept. 23), summer will be over as the sun appears directly over the equator – signaling the autumnal equinox.
According to the 2011 Astronomical Almanac the autumnal equinox is September 23 at 09:05 UTC (coordinated universal time), or more to the point, it will happen at 3:05 a.m. MDT.
For the East Kootenay, the final few weeks of summer have been spectacular.
We’ve enjoyed more than our fair share of sunshine, though we’re getting ‘sun time’ as a make up for the lack of it during the earlier part of summer.
The extended forecast reaching toward Sept. 28, according to Environment Canada, shows that autumn will begin in a normal fashion, as opposed to that sloppy and cool entrance summer made back in June. We can expect mostly sunny skies with a good likelihood of clouds on Tuesday, Sept. 27. However, the Elk Valley may be spared the Tuesday clouds.
Temperatures will range from highs of about 27/28 Celsius to lows of 1 C.
The dog days of summer is the theme to this photo presentation – with images captured from around the region in the past three weeks (Sept. 1 to 21).
