Canal Flats celebrating centennial

Canal Days May 29 to June 2

The Village of Canal Flats has only been incorporated since 2004, but the community at the south end of Columbia Lake has been around for a century.

This year’s Canal Days festivities is marking the centennial with a wide range of fun family events from May 29 to June 2.

CFlatsCivCenThis evening (Wednesday, May 29) features the annual talent show at the Canal Flats Civic Centre and Thursday, May 30 is Bingo at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre.

Friday, May 31 is Family Fun Night, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre.

The weekend fun really gets rolling on Saturday, June 1, beginning at 8 a.m. with the Seniors’ Pancake Breakfast, which runs until 10 a.m. That gives parade participants time to marshal at Martin Morigeau Elementary School at 10:30 a.m., in order for the annual parade to get rolling at 11 a.m.

The Civic Centre will be the hub of most activities during the afternoon, with burgers and hot dogs available from noon to 5 p.m.

The Forever Youth Group is hosting a wide range of games beginning at 2:30 p.m., including a watermelon eating contest, pie throwing, a pie bake off, axe throwing and other events and featues. There will be live entertainment in the Civic Centre from 1 to 5 p.m.

As usual, the beer garden will run in conjunction with the annual softball tournament, being run by the Canal Flats Fire Department. The entry fee per team is $250 and there will be prizes for the top three teams.

Saturday concludes with the dance, which begins at 10 p.m. and ends at 2 a.m.

On Sunday, June 2 the Canal Flats Forever Youth Group is hosting the Cardboard Duct Tape Boat Races at the beach. Registration for the races is at 1:30 p.m. and the start time is 2 p.m.
