Panorama summer season begins June 26
Panorama Mountain Resort will begin its summer operations on June 26. The mountain resort offers a wide variety of activities suitable for all ages, which fills the aspiration for both adventure seekers and those looking for a relaxing getaway.
Panorama has announced a host of new summer events this year.
Two of these events are scheduled on the weekend of July 3-5. The Hell’s Belles Women’s Mountain Bike Camp hosted by Lorraine Blancher (lbbikes.com) will appeal to novice or seasoned riders seeking to learn or refine their skills with an experience that’s more than the traditional weekend camp. Blancher will be joined by an accomplished roster of professional coaches including Lindsey Voreis from Ladies All Ride (ladiesallride.com) for a weekend of gravity progression.
The Toby Creek Kayak Race also scheduled on the July 3-5 weekend offers a total cash prize purse of at least $1,500. Hosted by Alberta Slalom Canoe Kayak and Alberta Whitewater Association this race promises competitive action in both intermediate and expert categories.
New this summer is the RAWK the Rockies music camp held on July 13-17 hosted by Speed Control in association with Yamaha Music Canada. Speed Control is a hard hitting rock trio dedicated to furthering music education and bringing music back to kids with their two to four day rock sessions.
One of the biggest events Panorama is expected to host this summer is Mudd, Sweat and Tears Rockies (muddsweatandtears.com) on September 12. The resort expects to see between 500 and 2,500 participants. The eight kilometre run will be filled with a series of fun, challenging and rewarding obstacles complete with tons of mud. “Very few locations offer such a diversity of activities, fantastic natural terrain and a long track record of hosting major events. We believe the event is a natural fit for the resort,” said Patrick Gillespie, race and mountain events manager.
Panorama has a celebrated history of hosting top tier mountain bike races and this summer the resort is hosting a BC Cup and a Canada Cup Downhill Mountain Bike Race. On July 16-19, in partnership with Dunbar Cycles (dunbarcycles.com) and presented by Intense Cycles, Canada’s best mountain bikers will compete on the legendary Panorama downhill race course. Expected to attend the race is Troy Brosnan who is currently ranked the number two rider in the world. Emceeing the race will be Brett Tippie, a pioneering figurehead in mountain biking most recently known for his colour-commentary at international sporting events and his ability to excite the crowd.
Panorama’s dedicated trail crew has been working hard in preparation for the race series. The course has been extended and rerouted in several areas. Most notable is the addition of two new table top jumps and a wooden launch ramp into the finish zone. The resort is also improving the park in general to provide an excellent ever-progressing experience for all levels of riders. Last summer work began to completely rebuild the beginner trail ‘Let It Ride.’
Three of five phases will be completed by opening day, vastly improving the beginner and intermediate riding experience. Another major change this summer is a complete renovation of the Panorama classic trail, Hells Bells. “We are fortunate to have a dedicated trail crew who are keen riders. Their knowledge, enthusiasm and hard work in combination with modern building techniques assures an incredible riding experience,” said Jason Simpson, director of mountain sports.
There is a renewed focus on hiking at the resort this summer. From casual walks to more strenuous excursions guests will discover improved maps, clearer signage, and better maintained trails.
New for children participating in Panorama’s Wilderness Survival Camp is an orienteering course designed to be a fun way for children to gain basic compass skills while navigating a natural environment.
A new tennis instructor, certified by the Tennis Professionals Association of Canada will be taking the Tennis Camps to new heights and will also be available for private and semiprivate lessons. For the first time the resort will be offering a new counsellor in training program for teenagers aged between 13-16 years. This program will give teens the opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours and participate in activities for free while under the supervision of a trained counsellor.
Panorama’s children’s programming is available all summer long offering day camps and one, two and three-day specialty camps.
