Parker’s Nature

By Shawn Parker

I was walking below Cominco Gardens the other day, looking for this Great Horned Owl I’ve heard is hanging around. I saw it briefly for about two seconds as it flew through the trees. So as I’m standing around, trying to get a view of this owl. this lady walks up. We chat for a second then she says, “look at the woodpecker.” It was about 20 feet in front of us on this old tree. As we watched it, the bird ducked into the hole for about 30 seconds, then came out and flew away. He wasn’t pecking away at the tree so I’m thinking it had young in there. Then the woman goes on to tell me about this bear cub her dog just chased away from their yard. Although stories of bears hanging around inside of town make me a bit nervous of hiking the trails and such, I’ve never heard of a bear attack here (at least not that I can remember). It’s still great to be out in nature and not have to drive for miles to get there, so I’ll take my chances and go. I should maybe get some pepper spray though.
