Obituary for Albert Matthew VINGE

Albert Matthew VINGE

July 8, 1928 – June 13, 2018

Al passed away early on the 13th of June in Fernie, BC, his residence for the last 3 years. His religious upbringing provided a moral base and positive outlook on life. He was a jack-of-all-trades and his sons, David, Donald and Barry recall one of his favourite sayings, “You’ll never learn younger”, which has inspired them to lead successful lives.

He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy, his sons, brothers, Joel and Mark and sister, Vangie Bergum. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert Marius and Edna Bergum, brothers, Joel in infancy, Daniel and sister, Dorothy. He was especially proud of his kids and grandkids, taking delight in following their varied and interesting lives. He will be sadly missed by grandchildren Christine, Derek, Karl, Dana, Lisa and great grandchildren Gerard, Thea, Leo and Annika.

One of Al’s accomplishments was to fix up an aging motel into a hostel, in what is now the Raging Elk Hostel. With his wife, Dorothy, they ran the hostel for 5 years providing a much needed accommodation for school, church and other groups throughout the year in the mountain mecca of Fernie. Their hard work allowed them to go into retirement with the opportunity to travel to warm climes in those cold Canadian winter months, visiting relatives in Arizona and traveling their merry way to Florida.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Trinity Lutheran Church of Fernie or a church or charity of your choice.
