Obituary for Cornelis Frederik de Zoete

Cornelis de Zoete was happiest behind the wheel of his car exploring new places and meeting new people. He has left for his ultimate journey passing away peacefully at Joseph Creek Care Village in Cranbrook, BC on July 10, 2019.
Born in Loosduinen, the Netherlands on Nov 23, 1922, Cor was the third of fifteen children, 9 boys and 6 girls. After 5 years of courtship Cor married the love of his life, Francina Penning on April 4, 1949. They spent their “honeymoon” on the Tibinta immigrating to Canada and settled in southern Ontario where he ran his own business.

Cor loved camping and travelling putting the two together exploring Canada and the USA until he was 85. He kept those memories alive by filling photo albums and slide carousels with “million dollar” photographs. His other passions included classical and choral music, singing in several choirs, gardening – caring for his beans and tomatoes until he was 94; and telling stories right until the end.

Cornelis is survived by his wife, Francina, of 70 years; children Frances (Tony Ferreira) of Portugal, Henry (Maria) of Cochrane AB, Jenny (Ron MacKay) of Halifax NS, and Corrinne (John Przeczek) of Cranbrook, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind four sisters. He was predeceased by his parents Hendrik J de Zoete and Anna C Torn and ten siblings. The family would like to thank Dr. Tait and the staff at the Joseph Creek Care Home and Kimberley Special Care Home plus numerous home care aides for taking exceptional care of Cornelis during the past several years.

‘Dad’ loved a good party and a good scotch. A tea to celebrate Cor’s life will be held at McPherson Funeral home in Cranbrook, BC on Thanksgiving weekend (details to follow closer to date). In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial donation to the Symphony of the Kootenays: PO Box 512 – Cranbrook, BC V1C 4J1 or a charity of your choice.
