Obituary for Peter Joseph CAUFIELD

Peter Joseph CAUFIELD

April 5, 1932 ~ September 6, 2020 (age 88)

Peter Joseph Caufield passed away peacefully on September 6 at the age of 88. He was the last surviving child of Edward and Elizabeth Caufield.

Peter was born in the Fernie hospital on April 5, 1932. He grew up in Fernie and loved spending his summers in Coal Creek. Growing up he was a gifted baseball and hockey player. He was also a great student, graduating at 17, and when it came time to choose between hockey and school, there was no question. He left for UBC to begin his goal of becoming a teacher, eventually earning a Masters Degree from Gonzaga University.

He began his teaching career in Sparwood in 1953. He taught in Sparwood for two years and then taught at Fernie Secondary School until he retired in 1987. He taught math and chemistry and mentored a number of young teachers along the way. He was also the sponsor of the Boys Curling Team, being an accomplished curler himself, and was extremely proud of his boys team who won the 1978-79 BC School Provincial Championship.

Peter loved to spend time outdoors. After retirement, he would spend his time golfing, fishing on the Elk River, picking blueberries near Morrisey, mushroom picking up Hartley Lake Road, and working in his vegetable garden. He also loved the winters on the beach he spent in Portugal with Jann.

He was an active member of the 3300 Club for more than 40 years and organized the Coal Creek Old Timers picnic for a number of years.

Peter is survived by his wife Jannice, his children Grace (Thomas), Adelaine (John), David, Teresa (Patty), his grandchildren Nicholas, Connor, Luke (Carley), Leah-Rose, Jocelyn (Ken), Brenna (Phillip), his great-grandchildren Jonni, Jude, Owen, Meera, and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his first wife Rose, his son Joseph, his parents Edward and Elizabeth, his brother Jack (Jean), sister Maureen (Joe), and brother Barney (Helen).

The family would like to thank Dr. McBeath and the staff and fellow residents at Rocky Mountain Village that supported Peter during his time there. Due to Covid restrictions there will be a private service held at Fernie Holy Family Catholic Church on Saturday September 12 which will be streamed via Zoom. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Red Cross Society – Fernie Branch are greatly appreciated.
