Obituary for William James Riddle Buchanan

William James Riddle Buchanan

April 12, 1940 – August 3, 2019
William (Bill) passed away peacefully at the Green Home in Cranbrook, August 3,2019 from the affects of Parkinson’s.
Bill is the eldest son of Win and Jim Buchanan who were longtime residents of Kimberley. He is predeceased by his parents Win and Jim Buchanan. He is survived by his sister Daphne and brother Neil, niece Ashley and many cousins.
Bill attended elementary and high school in Kimberley before attending the University of Montana where he obtained a BA Geology. He then travelled east to join Falconbridge Nickel Co. as an exploration geologist working out of Sudbury, ON. His workload took him to Noranda in Northern Quebec and to Keno Hill Mines in near Elsa, Yukon. In Sudbury, he met and married Brenda. Both curled a lot out of the Sudbury Curling Club. In the mid 80s, he returned to Kimberley where he entered into community life. He worked for BC Transit driving the bus known as the “Handy Bus” for about 15 years.
Bill was an outdoors man so he enjoyed skiing (downhill and cross-country) and became a ski instructor. He was an active member of the Kimberley Curling Club where he won many spiels. He also enjoyed biking, swimming and walking the dogs. He loved animals, so there was always a dog and/or cat in the house. Living only a block from the green he became a keen lawn bowler as well as looking after the green. He led an active life.
We thank all the caregivers who cared for Bill both at his home, the Ivy House and Green Home, also thanks to Dr. Vanzyl, Pieterse and Kathie for
making Bill’s last years bearable.
There will be no funeral by request. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the SPCA, Cominco Gardens, the Parkinson’s Society, Kimberley
Public Library or the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
