Obituary of Brigitte Marianne Somers

Brigitte Marianne Somers died peacefully around 2 am on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, at the age of 81, following a long battle with cancer.

Brigitte was born on February 15th, 1940, in Sindelfingen, a town near Stuttgart, Germany. She was 15 when her family migrated to Canada in 1956, settling initially in Calgary, Alberta. She married in 1959 moving subsequently to Whitehorse (Yukon) where, on May 3rd, 1969, she welcomed her beautiful daughter, Sandra, who from that moment onwards became the centre of her life and with whom she had many adventures and spent numerous summers visiting family in Germany.

Brigitte was a good-humored, devoted, and dedicated mother who enjoyed friends, arts and crafts, cooking exotic foods and the outdoors. She was a very kind and caring humanitarian, active in the Cranbrook German Club and the Trinity Lutheran Church Women’s Group in Whitehorse. She will be deeply missed by her family, many friends, and all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Harder (nee Mesiatowsky) Luke Pantin, her two grandchildren, Curtis and Tyanna Harder, her brother Carl Haegele (Norma), sister Sigrid Burton, various nieces and nephews, and extended family; Chris, and Raewyn Sinhuber.

Brigitte was predeceased by her father, Walter Haegele, and her mother Frida Pech (nee Filzer).

Special thanks to her oncologist Dr Khoo, all the staff at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital especially, Dr. Witten, Dr. Shroeder, and Nurse Nancy-Jo O’Neill for the wonderful care during her final days.

A Celebration of Brigitte’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 28th, 2021, at 3: 00 pm at McPherson Funeral Chapel, Cranbrook, B.C. to view via live stream please go onto top of website and click on LIVE SERVICES prior to service start.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
