Obituary of Kathleen Joyce Bond

Bond, Kathleen Joyce

August 24, 1918 – October 13, 2019

Joy Bond passed away peacefully on October 13, 2019 at the age of 101. She was born and raised in Invermere along with her older brother, Ralph, and younger sister, Doreen. Joy was a part-time Accountant for the Invermere Hardware Store while still in high school. She and her husband bought the business in 1945 and operated it as Bond’s Hardware until 1953, during which time they resided above the store.

Joy was known for her zest for life, kind heart, wonderful sense of humour and strong dedication to her church. She was very community minded and participated in a wide variety of activities and volunteer organizations. She hiked, skied and skated well into her 80’s. Her volunteering included the Valley Go Go Sisters, a group that supported grandmothers in Africa struggling to raise their grandchildren, and she was an active member of the Windermere Valley Historical Society, a group that manages the Pioneer Museum. Joy was a member of the local women’s militia group during World War II where she served as the group’s secretary. She was responsible for keeping every scrap of paper associated with her group, a task well suited to her outstanding record keeping skills. Joy’s passion was her garden and she enjoyed sharing her bounty as much as she loved working in it tirelessly. She cherished her family and friends and touched more lives than she realized. Joy lived a wonderful, full life and her mind was as sharp as ever right up until the end.

She will be dearly missed by daughters Lorna Holbrook (Willie), Carole Bond (Chris), grandson Dale Steedman (Joanne), granddaughter Aja Bond (Gabriel), great granddaughter Kylie Steedman, nieces Lynne, Trish, Debbie and Joy, nephews Brian and Jeff and her many close friends. Joy was predeceased by her husband Bill, brother Ralph, sister Doreen, niece Sheila and grandson Joel Tutte.

If desired, donations may be made directly to the Windermere Valley Shared Ministry or to a charity of your choice.
