Obituary of Margaret Jean MacNeill

Margaret Jean MacNeill

1938 – 2020

Margaret died peacefully in her Kimberley, B.C., home on Friday, November 6, 2020 with family and her precious cat, Buddy, close by.

The oldest of four children, Margaret was raised and schooled in Climax, Saskatchewan. After graduating from high school, she received her teacher training in Moose Jaw, where she taught for one year, then went on to teach in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Regina. While teaching, she completed a Bachelor of Education at the University of Regina. In the early 1980s, retirement and an empty nest allowed Margaret to spend more time on her favourite pastimes; reading novels late into the night, solving the daily Globe and Mail cryptic crosswords, preparing gourmet dinners for Greg, and playing bridge with her many good friends. The latter sometimes involved a bit of wine to stimulate the bidding. Teaching gave Margaret a lifetime of precious memories from the many wonderful children she felt privileged to teach, but family was her passion. She was an extraordinary mother, wife, and teacher, such a bright, loving person who was full of compassion and good humour.

She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her husband of 62 years, Greg, son, Kevin (Kathy), daughter, Shannon (Martin) Brilling, and grandchildren, Alec, Craig, and Alex. Margaret also leaves her brothers, Ward (Connie) and Neil (Shirley), and her nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alec, and Gertrude (Hemphill) McKenzie, her sister, Kay Elson, and her uncles, Daniel and Rory.

At Margaret’s request, there will be no funeral service. Instead, there will be a family memorial gathering next summer.
