Obituary of Vera Antonia Cecco

Vera Antonia Cecco

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Vera Antonia Cecco announces her passing on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. She left us peacefully and on her own terms after a courageous, years-long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Vera was born July 19, 1931, in Kimberley, B.C. She married the love of her life, Bruno, in September of 1952, who preceded her death in 2008. She often joked that when he first laid eyes on her, he abandoned plans to become a priest. Together, they created a life based on respect and a mutual love for their children and grandchildren. Vera was a common sight around town, active in both the community and a lifelong member of the Catholics Women’s League.

Nothing made her prouder than weighing her grandchildren at the local clinic when they were young. And with a sharp eye for numbers, would re-weigh them again. Just to make sure. Vera was recently blessed with great grandchildren, Miles, Elliot, and Atticus and will sorely miss the next new arrivals from granddaughters Jana and Milana. She loved reciting an old Italian rhyme that becoming a Bisnonna (Italian great-grandmother) made one crazy. “If we can’t laugh about it, what’s the point?” she’d say with a shrug.

Friends and family will forever remember her feisty personality, boundless energy, and her culinary passion. No one in town could count gnocchi like her.

Vera is survived by her loving and caring family, sister Vanda, daughter Liana (Bob) Horkoff, sons Larry (Pamela) and Robert (Sue), her grandchildren Jana, Lanny, Leyland, Julian, Milana, and Adrian whose loving memories of their Nonna will last a lifetime.

Prayers will be held at 7:00 pm on July 23, 2021 at the Sacred Heart Parish in Kimberley, B.C. Funeral mass at 11:00 am July 24, 2021, at the Sacred Heart Parish Kimberley, B.C. A reception with the family will be held at the Church Hall after the service.

This service will be viewable via live streaming. Please go onto www.mcpersonfh.com and click on LIVE SERVICES at the top,

The family would like to thank  the staff at The Pines and Garden View for their support and caring in our time of grief.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cominco Garden Fund, C/O 99 Howard St. Kimberley, B.C. V1A 2G9

Vera loved playing cribbage and whenever she scored points that seemed too good to be true, or a hand that didn’t quite add up, she’d get a twinkle in her eye. “You’ll miss me when I’m gone,” she’d say, pausing for dramatic effect  “We will, Vera. We will.”
