Canada’s all-star Chamber Ensemble, Octagon, is back on tour and will be appearing at Cranbrook’s beautiful Royal Alexandra Hall Wednesday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m.

This superb orchestral octet was formed in 1998 and the original ensemble boasted four members of the Order of Canada as well as five Juno award winners.

Current members are: Martin Beaver and Mark Fewer-violins, Rivka Golani– viola, Rachel Mercer-cello, Joseph Phillips-double bass, James Campbell-clarinet, Kathlyn McLean-bassoon and Kenneth Macdonald-French Horn.

Octagon, with its unusual make up of strings, clarinet bassoon and French horn is a hybrid chamber ensemble – half way between a string quartet and a chamber orchestra. Every nation has its prestige group and Canada is proud to be able to assemble Octagon with leading players from across Canada.

The program features the Septet, Opus 20 by Beethoven and Schubert’s Octet, Opus 166.
“This is a must see concert for rockers who want to know how to ‘shred.’ If you can’t make it to this concert then get a hold of a recording of Schubert’s String Quartet DEATH OF A MAIDEN. String Quartets are not just meant for polite wedding music,” stated Rod Wilson in ‘Above a Whisper.’
