Elkford going Wild this weekend
The District of Elkford is going Wild this weekend when it hosts Winter in the Wild Feb. 24 to 26.
Friday evening is all about ‘Light up the Night’ in the town where the road begins, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. snowman light up (or just turn on your Christmas lights), which illuminates the road/path to Wapiti Ski Hill. A procession, beginning at St. Bernard Catholic Church, will wind up to the ski hill. Participants are encouraged to bring flashlights.
At 6:30 p.m. there will be the Torchlight Relay at the ski hill, followed by fireworks.
From 7-9 p.m. at the ski hill there will be free teen skiing and movies, as well as a bonfire hosted by the Elkford Fire Department.
The fun moves downtown to the arenas (hockey and curling) and recreation complexes, beginning with a Pancake Breakfast (7 a.m. to 11 a.m.) at the Recreation Centre Banquet Hall, with an Atoms Hockey Tournament also getting underway at the arena.
From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. there is outdoor public skating behind the rec centre, before the games get underway.
Snow Ball gets underway at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m. at the Elks and Haines ball diamonds. Pre-registration is preferred (call 250-865-4614). Also beginning at 10 a.m. is Snow Golf at Mountain Meadows Golf Course.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there is a family sledding and skating party behind the rec centre and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. there is Paint Ball, also behind the rec centre.
Supper will be held at the rec centre banquet hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Again, pre-registration is preferred (call 250-865-4614).
