National Aboriginal Day Festival scheduled for June 16
The third Annual National Aboriginal Day Festival will be held on Saturday, June 16 at Lakeshore Resort and Campground.
The festival will begin at 11 a.m. with the grand entry and run until 7 p.m. The festival is presented by the Akisqnuknik Development Corporation.
The theme of the Festival is ‘Cultures in Contact.’ The event will feature guest speaker Keith Henry; CEO, Aboriginal Tourism Association of British Columbia.
The festival will showcase several talented native entertainers. Leon Cranebear and Eldene Stanley from Cranbrook, an audience favourite, will return this year to perform traditional native dance.
Hip Hop artist, Tristan Lefthand from Eden Valley, Alta. will be performing throughout the day and is sure to be a hit with the younger crowd.
Joe Pierre Jr. (pictured above) will be the Master of Ceremonies. He is also a story-teller extraordinaire. When Joe tells stories of the Ktunaxa people, you can hear a pin drop. He captivates the audience right from the start and takes the audience to a time of long ago.
The Le-La-La Dancers are a traditional Kwakwaka’wakw (pronounced kwa kwa key wok) dance company who present First Nations culture of Northern Vancouver Island. The group has shared their culture by entertaining and educating throughout the world for over 25 years under the direction of George Me’las Taylor.
The event promises to be fun for the entire family. Arts and crafts demonstrations are planned along with several exhibits. There will be face painting, food vendors and door prizes.
Everyone is welcome at the event. The cost of admission is free, so be sure to join us in celebrating National Aboriginal Day.
Lakeshore Resort and Campground is located approximately five km south of Windermere, on the shores of beautiful Lake Windermere.
