Welcome to the 13th annual Columbia Basin Culture Tour!

Self-directed and free of charge, the culture tour is a unique opportunity to meet people behind the scenes at galleries and museums, visit studios and venues not normally open, shop for original art or fine craft, and experience special events planned only for this weekend. This year’s tour has fascinating heritage sites and skilled local artists, including returning favourites and exciting new locations.

Before you hit the road, read the profiles to see the special events and exhibitions that are happening at each location.

Here are 10 hints for a great Culture Tour:

  1. COVID-19: All Culture Tour venues and visitors are required to follow current government COVID-19 orders and guidelines, including:
    • if you are sick or required to self-isolate, stay home;
    • follow physical distancing, mask, and handwashing recommendations;
    • respect directions and occupancy limits posted at venues;
    • do not travel in large groups;
    • if a venue is busy, consider coming back later.

  2. Start with a full tank of gas – some great spots are off the beaten track.
  3. Take your GPS, ‘Backroads of BC’ or other detailed map. The CBCT Directory maps are general, so a bigger picture can be helpful.
  4. Be prepared to explore. One-way streets and cul-de-sacs can be an adventure to find but don’t give up; that out of the way location could be a treasure!
  5. If you see something you like, buy it. Many of these locations are not open regularly, or sell their work at galleries outside of the area. That beautiful hand-made object may be one-of-a kind, and might not be there if you wait for “next time”. Do not be surprised if you save on sales taxes as many home-based artisans do not have to collect GST.
  6. There will be lots of activities and events for all ages, but keep groups within your “bubble” and small in number, as there will be occupancy limits due to COVID-19.
  7. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You might be doing some wandering through gardens and yards to get to studios. Sunscreen and a hat are a good idea; even a bottle of water or two. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up.
  8. Plan to stop for lunch or refreshments along the way. This is a great chance to visit some new restaurants and many have outdoor patios with lovely views.
  9. Plan to spend one day, at least. Events start at 10 am and run to 5 pm, both Saturday and Sunday, which gives you a chance to explore further afield.

Be smart, safe and respectful. Despite precautions, being in public increases your risk of COVID-19. You need to decide your risk tolerance for being in public. Should guidelines change and require us to cancel the event, the latest updates will be posted to Facebook.

See you on the tour!
