‘Stories from the Shadows’ is a compilation of photos taken during my time working at The Free Press, from 2016 to 2019.
The title of the gallery represents a characteristic that all chosen subjects share – humility. Inspired by them, I brought their stories out of the shadows and in turn, allowed others the chance to be inspired as well.
These people are humble folk, and do not live to boast about their accomplishments. For this I respect them greatly.
This gallery is meant not only as a dedication to those framed on the wall, but also a dedication to the thousands of individuals I had the pleasure of speaking with over my years at The Free Press. It is my way of showing appreciation, gratitude and thanks. It is also meant to serve as a reminder that small towns contain some of the best stories, just waiting to be brought to light.
Everyone has a story worthy of being told.
Phil McLachlan is a writer and photographer based out of Penticton, B.C. In 2016 he moved to Fernie where he served as reporter, then editor of The Free Press newspaper until November, 2019
