Board supports Kannelly’s Camp rec site application

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) will be advising the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) that it supports the Moyie Lake Snowmobile and ATV Club Crown Land Application to establish and maintain a BC Recreation Site at Kannelly’s Camp.

The site is located beside the Yahk River, 4.4 kms west of Gilnockie Provincial Park.

The regional board unanimously agreed to support the application during its March 4 meeting in Cranbrook.

“The proposal will help support a diversified tourism sector and is in accordance with the objectives of the Regional Sustainability Strategy,” a RDEK planning department report to the board noted.

The Crown land application is pursuant to Section 57 of the Forest and Range Practices Act to designate 2.2 ha near the Yahk River and west of Gilnockie Park as a BC Recreation Site to preserve it as a public resource.

“The subject site is an old logging camp generally known as Kannelly’s Camp which is currently used by the public for camping,” the RDEK planning report stated.
