Christy Wheeldon seeks vacated council seat

Long-time Cranbrook resident Christy Wheeldon has submitted her nomination papers for the upcoming City of Cranbrook by-election. She is seeking the council seat left vacant by recently elected Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka.

Wheeldon is a long time Cranbrook resident, having moved here in late 1990s fresh out of college. She quickly found a love for our community and the people.

Christy jumped into community service as a teenager, starting off with the Victorian Order of Nurses. Upon arrival in Cranbrook she joined the Kinette Club of Cranbrook where she embraced the motto, “Serving the Community’s Greatest Needs.” Through the Kinette Club, she became passionate about our community, the people and our needs.

Cranbrook is also where she met her husband, and where they are raising two children.

Recently, Christy has focused her volunteer and community service work into her children’s school by coordinating special events, fundraisers and literacy initiatives. She is a former health care professional working in Senior Care-Recreation Therapy with a specialization in gerontology. Christy was also the World Host Facilitator for the region delivering the provinces acclaimed customer service program to businesses, groups and organizations.

Christy always has a community project on the go. She is currently the chair of the Sam Steele Society and has used her organizational skills and community knowledge to help grow the festival into the largest of its kind in the Kootenays.

Christy has a deep sense of the value of giving back to the community and of creating a safe, healthy and clean environment for her children and all residents. As a family and with help from many friends, one of Christy’s great joys is converting her garage into a Haunted House at Halloween. She has seen the power of community events and how they can pull people together and build community spirit.

She is fiscally conservative and socially responsible, committed to spending our tax dollars wisely and with respect for the taxpayers of Cranbrook. Her short-term goals include continuing with roads and infrastructure upgrades, economic development, Joseph Creek restoration, Cranbrook revitalization and the general enhancement of quality of life for all residents.

Wheeldon feels the current council is doing a great job and is moving Cranbrook in the right direction. She is planning on running a positive campaign focusing on our city’s own mission statement…”To be a successful and progressive community and to preserve and further enhance the high quality of life enjoyed by the citizens.”

Christy has been working for and with the community for nearly two decades. Laying sod in a park to being the chair of the Sam Steele Society – no job has been too big or small. Christy has a strong social conscience and has participated in numerous other community organizations and events with her family. She has been and always will be `committed to our community.`

On October 21, Christy is asking for your support in the local by-election for Cranbrook city council.   The dates for the By-Election is on October 21 with advanced voting opportunity on October 11 and 18.
