City and Firefighters Local 1253 reach new collective agreement

The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Cranbrook Firefighters Local 1253 and the City of Cranbrook have reached a new collective agreement, the terms of which run from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2014.

The new agreement provides for wage increases equivalent to the BC Standard Rate for firefighters for the duration of the collective agreement. Various improvements to working standards and pension for the city and the employees are also included in the new agreement.

“I am very pleased that this agreement has been reached,” says David Lind, Deputy Director of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services. “The contract reflects the high level of professionalism provided by our firefighters and our dispatcher. It is this professionalism which has made it possible to engrain a strong sense of public service into the workplace culture and develop the fire department into a true learning organization.”

“Our team and the city’s team worked collaboratively to come up with an agreement, that is beneficial for both parties,” says Clayton Murrell, President of Cranbrook Firefighters Local 1253.

“Council was very pleased to ratify this agreement,” says Mayor Wayne Stetski. “We recognize the outstanding relationship in place between the city and the firefighters. We are fortunate to have a very professional group of individuals in our fire department who believe in serving their community both on and off the job.”

The City of Cranbrook currently employs 20 firefighters and one dispatcher, providing a variety of fire suppression, emergency and first responder services including water and ice, confined space rescue and technician level hazardous materials services to the city.
