East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKC) announces the launch of the first ever Community Cash Awards with a goal of developing healthy and diverse communities.

The Community Cash Awards will offer community groups an opportunity to apply for funding while involving EKC members and the community in choosing the award winners.

Community groups are invited to apply for Community Cash Awards by submitting an application form by Friday, March 11.  EKC will select groups to go forward to the next round, and the groups selected can promote themselves and their projects for three hours at the Cranbrook branch from April 5-9.

“The finalists will be invited to set up information tables to promote their organization at EKC’s Annual General Meeting taking place in Cranbrook on April 22 at the Heritage Inn,” says Diane Byford, member of EKC Board of Directors.

At the AGM, members, and non-members including youth will receive EKC Community Cash to ‘invest’ with one or more of the community groups of their choice. Each of the groups will receive $500 for attending the AGM as well as the real cash equivalent to the Community Cash they accumulate throughout the event.

The group who receives the most Community Cash will also receive an additional $500 in funding. This provides a fun and unique way to involve both EKC members and the community in selecting the Community Cash Award recipients.” For those whose children do not want to attend the full AGM a family friendly movie will be shown, complete with popcorn!

Members, non-members, supporters and youth who wish to participate must RSVP that they will attend EKC’s Annual General Meeting by April 13 by calling Pam Pinch at 250-426-8223 local 3361.

In addition to the Community Cash Awards, EKC’s Eric Johnstone is calling on post-secondary students in Cranbrook, Sparwood, Fernie, and Elkford to apply for EKC’s Student Awards.

According to Johnstone, “Each year, EKC gives out $12,500 in Student Awards. The 2016 application form is now available and the deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 12. EKC understands the financial demands of post-secondary education and we encourage all students to apply.”
