Feds provide funds for seniors’ housing
The federal government March 6 provided more than a million dollars for seniors’ housing projects in the Elk Valley.
Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks, on behalf of the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development, presented $600,000 for Sparwood’s Lilac Terrace expansion and $528,000 for the purchase of units at Veneto Apartments in Fernie.
Accompanying Wilks at a special presentation in Sparwood were: Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines, Minister Responsible for Core Review, MLA for Kootenay East; Cal McDougall, Mayor of the District of Sparwood; Mike Sosnowski, RDEK Electoral Area A Director; Cindy Gallinger, former Columbia Basin Trust board member and representatives from Elk Valley Seniors Housing Society (pictured here).
The funding announcement was also the official celebration of renovations at Lilac Terrace, which will provide an additional 12 units of affordable housing for seniors with low-to-moderate incomes in Sparwood.
The newly expanded Lilac Terrace, located at 102 2nd Ave., will soon offer 42 units for seniors with low-to-moderate incomes.
“A special acknowledgement to Deborah Friesen who brought the project at Lilac Terrace to fruition,” Wilks noted later on his Facebook page.
In addition to the Federal government funds, $200,000 was provided to the Lilac Terrace project by the Regional District of East Kootenay, through Electoral Area A Director Mike Sosnowski. Those funds are to be used to sponsor a palliative care ward.
Funding from the governments of Canada and B.C. will also allow the Elk Valley Family Society to acquire 12 two-bedroom units of affordable rental housing in the 45-unit Veneto Place development in Fernie.
