RDEK Board Highlights

RDEK wallThe following is a breakdown as to what occurred during the April 10 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board meeting.

10-Year Service Award

RDEK Board Chair Rob Gay presented Lynne Newhouse (pictured above) with a 10-year service award. Lynne is our Environmental Services Secretary and is known for her friendly service.

Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Hazard and Risk Assessment completed


The Cold Spring Creek Debris Flow Hazard and Risk Assessment has been accepted by the board. The assessment was commissioned to identify the potential for future debris flow events on Cold Spring Creek and practical mitigation measures, if required. The debris flow hazard was not determined to be high, and the project will be considered for future funding opportunities. Spur Valley well development moving forward

The construction contract for the Spur Valley Well Development Project has been awarded to Border Holdings Ltd. Construction is expected to get underway in a few weeks and will last into October.

Technical memo on groundwater well accepted

The RDEK board accepted the Groundwater Development Potential —Technical Memorandum for the Windermere Water System. An option to improve the Windermere Water System was to consider groundwater as a source for potable water. Piteau Associates Engineering Ltd. completed the detailed groundwater analysis and test well and determined the potential to meet the demand for a public water system with groundwater wells is low.

Groundwater Monitoring Contract awarded

The proposal submitted by Eco/Logic Environmental for the Solid Waste Services Groundwater Monitoring contract has been accepted and the Chair and CAO have signed a five-year agreement with Eco/Logic Environmental. The RDEK conducts regular groundwater monitoring at its active and closed landfills and exfiltration basins.

Edgewater Utility Advisory Commission appointments

RDEKEdgewaterGraham Wake, Roberta Hall, Michael Hutchinson and Scott Ivers have been re-appointed and Barbara Neraasen has been appointed to the Edgewater Utility Advisory Commission for a two-year term. The Advisory Commission provides input to RDEK staff and Electoral Area G Director on the operation and maintenance of the Edgewater Water and Sewer Systems.

Representative appointed to Radium Library Board

Tom Symington has been appointed to the Radium Hot Springs Public Library Board representing Electoral Areas F and G, the District of Invermere and Village of Canal Flats for the term April 10 to January 31, 2017.

9-1-1 Servicing Agreement signed

The Chair and CAO have been authorized to sign the agreement with the Tobacco Plains Indian Band for the provision of 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone Services for the term March 1 to February 29, 2020.

CR28Special Event Licence approved

The Special Event Licence for the Wycliffe Exhibition Association Cranbrook Pro Rodeo to be held August 14-16 at the Wycliffe Exhibition Grounds has been granted.

Discretionary Grants-in-Aid (DGIA)

The BC Seniors Games —2015 BC 55+ Games will receive $400 from the Area C DGIA account to help offset costs associated with Zone 7 Seniors’ participation in the Games in North Vancouver.

The Columbia Valley Arts Council will receive $1,000 from the Electoral Area F DGIA account and $750 from the Electoral Area G DGIA account for the Art From the Heart children’s art show at Pynelogs.

The Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley will receive $4,000 from the Electoral Area F DGIA and $1,000 from the Electoral Area G DGIA accounts for its Bereavement Programs.
