SD5 board asks sides to go to binding arbitration

The School Board of Trustees for School District No. 5 (SD5) has sent a letter to the provincial government and BC Teachersā€™ Federation (BCTF) asking them to enter into binding arbitration to help settle the ongoing teachersā€™ strike.

The board Sept. 9 agreed to have a joint letter sent to the Education Minister Peter Fassbender, and BCTF President Jim Iker, ā€œurging the parties to immediately enter into binding arbitration through the process of a three-person arbitration panel to resolve the BC Public School Contract dispute, and to copy this letter to our education partners and to media.ā€

The letter reflects the mood of the provinceā€™s teachers, with union members Sept. 10 voting 99.4% to seek binding arbitration

A total of 41,000 teachers have been on strike in the province since June 17, with half a million students out of class.
