SD5 Board Notes

The following is a summary of School District No. 5 (SD5) School Board of Trustees motions carried during their Feb. 10 meeting in Cranbrook.

MOTIONS CARRIED

Advocacy

That the five recommendations from the “White Paper on Athletics” Report go to the Board for approval.

That the Board approves the Enhancement Agreement Annual Report.

That the Board writes a letter to BCSTA that highlights our same concerns as SD46 regarding the proposed MOU and the unexpected termination of BCPSEA Board of Directors.

That the Board of Education writes a follow-up letter to the Minister of Finance with a copy to the usual stakeholders requesting a progress update on Recommendations 24 – 40 from the Report on the Budget 2014 Consultations from the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services (SSCFGS) and urging government to take action as regards recommendations 22 – 36 from the Report on the Budget 2015 Consultations from the SSCFGS.

That the Board writes a letter to BCSTA reminding them that letters to the Minister also go to the opposition parties as members of government.

Policy

That the amended Draft Policy Legacy of Learning be sent to the Board of Education for approval.

Finance operations

That the Board of Education writes a letter to the Ministers of Finance and Education with a copy to the usual stakeholders requesting the Ministers of Finance and Education review the state of the schools and buildings in all districts, and that funding be made available to upgrade or replace in a timely manner those buildings in need of upgrade or replacement

General

That the Board rescinds Motion R – 15 – 6: “that the Board write a letter to the City of Cranbrook and the Regional District of East Kootenay to request they undertake a review of the procedures related to all advertising with respect to the election of SD5 Trustees for the City of Cranbrook and Electoral Area C.”

That the Board endorse Trustee McPhee in his election bid for a position as Director of the British Columbia School Trustees’ Association (BCSTA).

Second and third reading of the Amended Annual Budget Bylaw 2013/2014

In June the Board sends a preliminary budget to Government based on projected incomes and expenditures for the upcoming school year (2014/2015). In January the budget is finalized based on actual income (ie: funding based on enrolment etc.) and expenditures of the current school year.

That the Board write a letter to the Cranbrook Daily Townsman and the Elk Valley newspapers requesting that they undertake an extensive and comprehensive campaign in future, SD5 Trustee Elections to enhance voter participation.
