Sparwood Council Facts

The following is a breakdown as to what occurred during the June 1 District of Sparwood council meeting.

MADD Report Impaired Drivers 911 Signage

Katryna Sigurdson representing MADD made a presentation to council on the Report Impaired Drivers (RID) 911 Signage Program. The signage encourages people to call 9-1-1 to report suspected impaired drivers to police. Council referred the request to staff to report back to council at a future meeting.

Sparwood Roads – Service Level Review

The district will be undertaking a study to evaluate all of the roads, lanes, trails, walkways, and parking lots in Sparwood. This study will establish options for levels of service and costs associated with maintaining those levels. The study will provide council with the opportunity to set road maintenance standards and establish the amount to set aside in reserves to maintain that standard. Council authorized that the rough section of upper Matevic Road be scarified and maintained with grading and dust control during 2015.

UBCM Convention

The Chief Administrative Officer will be requesting a meeting with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure at the 2015 UBCM Convention in Vancouver in September to discuss grant funding for the Highway 3 and 43 intersection.

Playground equipment

The District of Sparwood will be disposing of existing playground equipment for recycling and salvage purposes to interested parties. The five playgrounds within the community are aging (25 years old) and are in need of replacement. As part of the district’s maintenance program, staff checks all of the playground equipment on a monthly basis to ensure that it remains safe.

Mosquito Control Program

The District of Sparwood has been operating the Nuisance Mosquito Control Program for over 20 years. The program controls the mosquito larvae under a Pesticide Management Plan, approved by the Province of BC.

The goal has been to reduce their numbers to tolerable levels using integrated pest management measures. Adult mosquito control is not part of the program. For the past four years the District of Sparwood has contracted Culex Environmental Ltd. to carry out the Nuisance Mosquito Control Program using an environmentally sensitive approach. With close monitoring and surveillance of mosquito development sites, Culex Environmental Ltd is able to treat these areas with larvicide containing naturally occurring soil-bacteria known to be specific to mosquito larvae.

A qualified treatment team will be making ground-based and aerial applications to ensure optimum results. ElectroRecycle – Recycle those old appliances

Did you know that some of your old appliances can be recycled? ElectroRecycle will have a tent set up at the Recreation Centre during Coal Miner Days on Saturday, June 13, from 12– 4 p.m. where they will collect used appliances and bring them to a recycling depot for FREE. Be sure to gather up your old, unwanted gadgets so they can be properly disposed of. There will be recycling trivia games for kids and prizes to be won! Residents can drop off their broken blenders, coffee makers, microwaves, hair dryers, treadmills, etc. for free and they will be transported to the nearest recycling facility. 2015 Tax Notices

The 2015 tax notices have been mailed out. If you are a new owner and have not received your tax notice by June 8, please come into the District Office to obtain a duplicate copy. Notices have been mailed to the owners shown on the Assessment Roll. Depending upon the date of purchase, we may not have the new owner’s information and the tax notice will be mailed to the previous owner.

Outdoor Fire Pits

It is that time of year again when people want to enjoy a fire in their back yard. Please note that you must first obtain a Fire Pit Permit as it is a requirement for all properties within the District of Sparwood. Permits are available free of charge from the Fire Department and must be renewed every year.

Senior’s Birthday Book

Sparwood commemorates seniors turning 75 years of age

The District of Sparwood recognizes the contribution that seniors make to our community. Those Sparwood seniors who have, or will, reach the age of 75 years this year are invited to meet with Mayor Cal McDougall and members of council to sign the ‘Senior’s Birthday Book’ on Friday, June 19 at 1 p.m. in Council Chambers. They will also receive a lilac lapel pin (Sparwood’s flower) that has been specially made to commemorate the occasion. Please notify the District of Sparwood Municipal Office by June 10 if you, or someone you know has turned 75 years of age or will be turning 75 this year. We will then send an invitation to the recipient to attend an afternoon tea in Council Chambers. Family and friends are also encouraged to attend. The Senior’s Birthday Book will be kept at the Municipal Office as part of our community’s heritage records. Please ensure that you or your loved one becomes part of Sparwood’s history

Sprinkling Regulations

As a reminder, the District of Sparwood sprinkling regulations are in effect from June 1 through September 30 each year, to promote water conservation. Even numbered addresses can water on even calendar days, and odd numbered addresses can water on odd calendar days.

Homes with automatic irrigation systems can water daily, provided it is between 12 and 6 a.m. Exceptions to sprinkling restrictions include nurseries, golf courses, farms, turf and tree farms, municipal parks, playing fields, and other municipal properties. There will be special permission for those residents who have installed a new lawn (either seed or sod) for a period of 21 days after installation of the lawn.
