The Village of Canal Flats today announced it is prohibiting all open burning except small campfires, effective immediately.

Canal Flats Fire Department Interim Fire Chief Peter Fry noted Category 2 and 3 fires, including grassfires, are prohibited along with the use of fireworks, sky lanterns and use of burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description (except when used for a campfire).

Campfires are permitted within village boundaries under the following guidelines:

• Any fire smaller than .5 metres high by .5 metres wide;
• You must have ready access to eight litres of water and a shovel for the entire time your campfire is lit;
• Your campfire must be completely extinguished, and the ashes must be cool to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time.
