Columbia Valley RCMP Report

This past week, July 30 to August 5, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 100 calls for service. This was down from 111 calls during the same period last year. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.
More charges on top of breach of conditions for youth
On August 1, at 2 a.m., police officers were conducting patrols near the skate park as the area had been subject of recent vandalism. Officers located several youths inside the women’s public washroom, one of whom was on conditions. The youth who was breaching his conditions by being out past his curfew was arrested and now faces additional charges.
Unlocked vehicle with keys in taken and damaged
On August 3 an Invermere resident discovered someone had taken her vehicle overnight and returned it with damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle. The owner had left her vehicle unlocked with the keys in it and when she was leaving for work she noticed her car was parked in a different spot with the headlights on. It’s been said before but please lock your doors and remove your valuables. Most thefts from vehicles are crimes of opportunity.
Possible thief scared away
On August 4, at 2:15 a.m., police received a report of a male in white shorts walking through a parking lot on 9th Avenue in Invermere trying vehicle doors. When the complainant confronted the male he claimed he had lost his keys. Officers patrolled the area but unfortunately were not able to locate the suspicious male. This is an example of how these criminals typically operate. If a vehicle is locked, they will continue until they find one that is unlocked.
Alert person sniffs out scam
On August 4 a local business received a telephone call from someone purporting to be from BC Hydro. The caller claimed the business had an outstanding bill that necessitated a call back to another telephone number. When the business representative called the provided number she was told she owed approximately $1,000. The business representative became suspicious and contacted BC Hydro who confirmed this was a scam.
Checkstop yields two impaired drivers
During the early hours of August 5, police conducted a checkstop at Athalmer Road and Lakeside Road. During the checkstop officers issued two 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibitions for impaired driving. Both vehicles were also impounded.
