This past week, September 24 through to September 30, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 64 calls for service. Here are a few examples that were handled by our General Duty officers of the Columbia Valley RCMP this week.
Vehicle fire north of Fairmont
In the early hours of September 24, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a vehicle fire on Highway 93/95 approximately 10 km north of Fairmont Hot Springs. Members attended along with Windermere Fire Department after a 2012 Dodge 3500 was located in the southbound ditch fully engulfed in flames. The driver was out of the vehicle and uninjured. He advised he was driving southbound on the highway when he heard a large clunk from the undercarriage of his truck. He then noticed flames coming up from under the vehicle, which led him to direct the vehicle into the ditch as he had little brake control. The fire was fully extinguished and the vehicle was towed away from the scene.
Bear awareness
On September 24 and 25, RCMP members assisted BC Conservation Officer Service in securing an area near Eileen Madson Primary School where a juvenile bear had become accustomed. BC Conservation officers took actions to ensure the bear was no longer comfortable in the area and no further calls were received regarding this bear last week.
Fail to stop for school bus will yield $368 fine
On September 24t, at 7:50 a.m., an older Mazda pickup truck that was travelling northbound on Highway 93/95 near Wilmer Pontoon Road failed to stop for a school bus with an activated stop sign. Columbia Valley RCMP received the images from the school bus on-board cameras and a violation ticket will be issued in the coming days to the registered owner of the vehicle for Failing to Stop for School Bus under the Motor Vehicle Act, which is a fine of $368.
Suspicious occurrence
On September 26, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of suspicious circumstances as a citizen located a t-shirt on one of the paths of the Ray Brydon Dog Park next to Toby Creek, Invermere with what is believed to be blood spots. The t-shirt was a male pink Hollister California with a flower graphic on the back of the shirt and just ‘Hollister California’ written on the front of the shirt. Police searched the area and found no other items believed to be related to the t-shirt. Any information regarding this investigation can be brought to the attention of Cst. Fail to stop after collision with a dog
On September 28, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a driver who had hit a dog in Canal Flats with a vehicle and failed to stop to assist the owner. The dog and its owner were walking on a dirt road near the cemetery when a blue Volkswagen Golf two-door came around a corner and hit the seven-month old puppy. The dog ran away from the area and was located several hours later. RCMP is asking the driver or a passenger in the vehicle to come forward.
