This past week, December 17 through December 23, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 76 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.
Man arrested for stealing three laptops
On December 17, The Source store in Invermere reported a male stole three laptop computers from the store on December 15. The theft was captured on video surveillance. Investigators quickly identified a suspect and on December 19 a 20-year-old male from Invermere was arrested for theft and released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.
Two reportedly fall through ice
On December 17, two people reportedly fell through the ice near Kinsmen Beach in Invermere. The caller said the two individuals managed to get out of the water on their own and were seen laughing and joking as they skated away. The individuals were gone when police arrived.
Van hits ditch near Brisco
On December 18, at 5:45 p.m., the driver of a white Ford van lost control of his vehicle on Highway 95 near Brisco. The driver reported he had just crossed a bridge when he started fishtailing and ended up in the ditch. The driver was not injured but his vehicle was not drivable and had to be towed.
Driver abandons vehicle after crash
On December 19, at 4:45 p.m., the driver of a white Ford F350 lost control of his truck on Indian Beach Road in Windermere and collided with a hydro pole. The driver then fled the scene. Officers located the driver at a residence in Windermere. The driver was issued violation tickets for Failing to Remain at the Scene of an Accident, Driving Without Due Care and Speeding Relative to Conditions.
Intoxicated driver taken to hospital
On December 21, at 4 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols on Highway 93/95 near Fairmont Hot Springs when she noticed a white Ford truck swerving back and forth on the highway. The officer initiated a traffic stop and spoke to a male driver who refused to cooperate with instructions. The driver was too intoxicated to provide a breath sample and, out of concern for the driver, he was transported to Invermere and District Hospital to be assessed. A blood demand was made and the samples will be analyzed to determine if the driver was impaired by alcohol.
