Columbia Valley RCMP Report

This past week, June 10 through June 16, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 82 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.
Local woman victimized in scam
On June 12 an individual called the RCMP to report she had fallen victim to a scam.
The complainant said she received a call from the CIBC “Fraud squad” who claimed there was suspicious activity on her account. The caller requested the victim purchase $2,000 in Google Play gift cards. The victim agreed and provided the card information to the fraudster. The following day the fraudster called back and told her she needed to go to her bank and obtain a money order which was required to clear the “suspicious activities.”
The victim’s bank recognized the fraud and alerted the victim, who then reported the scam to police.
Columbia Valley RCMP would like to remind individuals that legitimate businesses do not accept gift cards as payment. Police are also asking employees of businesses selling gift cards to be aware of these scams and alert potential victims.
Officers called to campground for possible 3 a.m. fight
On June 15, at approximately 3 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP was dispatched to a possible fight at Redstreak Campground in Kootenay National Park. Officers attended and found a group of young campers sitting around a campfire talking loudly. The group of campers agreed to lower the volume of their conversations. There was no evidence of a fight.
Bike found in Fairmont
On June 15, Columbia Valley RCMP recovered a Supercycle Storm 18 speed bike in an alley near Hot Springs Road in Fairmont Hot Springs. If you’re missing a bike that matches this description, please contact the Columbia Valley RCMP and quote file number 2019-1341.
