Crash sparks grass fires and power outage

Members of the Edgewater and Radium Fire Departments responded to two small grass fires this afternoon (May 8) along Highway 95 north of Radium Hot Springs.

“The first fire was sparked after a vehicle being driven by a lone occupant left the highway, striking a power pole,” explained Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Chief Jim Miller. “Once the lines went down, there was power surge along the line about 1.5km north of the original scene, which resulted in a second grass fire.”

As the call was right on the border between Radium and Edgewater’s Fire Services, five firefighters from Edgewater responded to the two calls along with an additional six members of the Radium Fire Department.

The driver sustained minor injuries in the incident; however, was not affected by the fire.

“Everyone worked really cooperatively today and we were able to safely contain and extinguish both fires,” described Miller. “I’d like to thank BC Hydro, the BC Ambulance Service, RCMP and the crew from the Radium fire department for their assistance on the call.”

BC Hydro has been working to restore power as quickly as possible; however, there are still areas without power including the community of Edgewater.
