CVCF granting supports student food security
David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) has typically provided student lunches to those in need. Previously, this assistance program was funded by proceeds from the cafeteria. Due to COVID-19, they were unable to operate the cafeteria when school opened in September.
Realizing the unfulfilled need, a team of administrators and staff put together a special lunch program to ensure no student was left hungry. However, without the cafeteria proceeds, funding was a challenge.
Since April 2020, the Columbia Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) has been supporting COVID-related needs in the community through the COVID-19 Community Response Fund.
In May 2021, the CVCF completed its Phase Two granting, which included $5,000 to DTSS supporting the Student Lunch Program which currently serves over 30 students in need.
Other COVID-19 Community Response Fund Phase Two Grant recipients include:
– Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley, Operational & Programming Expenses – $5,000;
– Summit Youth Centre, COVID Supplies, Staffing, & Travelling Skate Park – $5,000;
– Radium Hot Springs Public Library, Safety Equipment & Operational Expenses – $5,000;
– District of Invermere (Cycling Without Age), 2021 Operating & Bike Safety Modifications – $5,000;
– Recreation Adaptive Society, Seated Adaptive Sledge – $5,000;
– District of Invermere (Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club), Youth Development Equipment – $2,500;
– Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 (Rocky Mountain Place-based Learning Network), Outdoor Learning Classroom Kits – $5,000;
– Village of Radium Hot Springs (Radium Rotary Community Garden), Garden Maintenance (Lost Fundraising Income) – $5,000;
– Rocky Mountain School District No. 6, DTSS Student Lunch Program – $5,000;
– CBEEN, Outdoor Learning Equipment, Pre-School/Daycare/Dayhome – $4,950;
– District of Invermere (Peaks Gymnastics), Operational & Programming Expenses – $5,000;
– Columbia Valley Food Bank (CV Food & Farm), Operational & Programming Expenses – $5,000;
– District of Invermere (Windermere Valley Ski Club), Coaching & Programming Expenses – $5,000.
The Columbia Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) is celebrating its 20th year as the connection between donors and community needs. Through community granting and student scholarships/bursaries the CVCF exists to enrich lives in the Columbia Valley.
