CVSAR rescue sledders lost in Catamount Glacier area

On Sunday, March 21, at 8 p.m., Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) was tasked to assist the RCMP in locating two males on snowmobiles who activated their two-way emergency communications device in the Catamount Glacier area, about 35 km west of Radium Hot Springs.

In communicating with the RCMP, it was reported that they had become disoriented and could not find their way out.

CVSAR mobilized a team of members on snowmobiles with numerous support personnel to assist with this assignment. Despite darkness and winter storm conditions CVSAR proceeded to search the area from which the emergency communications device was activated and successfully found the individuals at approximately 12:30 a.m. The snowmobilers suffering from cold exposure, were assisted off the glacier and assessed by BC Ambulance Services as a precaution, CVSAR reported on social media.

“A big thanks to the all the volunteers that responded to this call and especially to those who worked through the night,” CVSAR said.

“Remember to be prepared for a possible night out and have a plan when venturing into the backcountry. If you become lost or injured, please call for help earlier rather than later – we want to get you home safely!”
