Doctor Creek fire forces evacuation order

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has issued an Evacuation Order for the Findlay Creek area, including north of Whitetail Lake up to Dutch Creek; west to the Purcell Conservancy Corridor; south to Doctor Peak and Mount Allen; east to the Skookumchuck FSR. west of Canal Flats, due to the out-of-control Doctor Creek drainage wildfire.

“An increase in fire behaviour has prompted the BC Wildfire Service to recommend the RDEK issue an Evacuation Order,” explained RDEK Emergency Operations Cente Director Terry Balan. “Our first priority is public safety. These decisions are not made lightly and everyone within the evacuation order area needs to leave immediately.”

All persons in the affected area are ordered to leave the area immediately.

Evacuees are asked to leave their properties immediately and check in with Emergency Support Services at 250-342-1480.

BC Wildfire Service reports the lightning-caused fire remains at about 250 ha as of 8:30 p.m. August 19.
