Fairmont cannabis store focus of upcoming hearing

A process is afoot that could result in the establishment of Fairmont Hot Spring’s first cannabis retail store.

Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors Dec. 4 passed the first two readings of Bylaw No. 3024, which if passed will amend the text of the current zoning bylaw to permit a cannabis retail store in Fairmont Centre, located on the east side of Highway 93/95.

The applicant, Fairmont / RHS Hot Springs Holdings’ Sacha Elwakeel is seeking to establish the cannabis store in Unit 3 of the mall located at 4992 Fairmont Frontage Road.

The proposal is supported by the commercial policies in the OCP, a RDEK staff report noted.

There are currently no zones in the RDEK that permit cannabis retail sales, the report points out, adding, “If the proposed amending bylaw is approved, it will permit a cannabis retail store on the subject property only.”

As a result of the first two readings being passed, there will be public hearing for Bylaw No. 3024 on Monday, December 21 at 6 p.m.

The public hearing will be held via Zoom webinar conference.
