Fire breaks out during practice
New recruits with the Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Service got more than they bargained for during their training session Saturday (April 6) as a fire broke out during their practice.
“We were in the middle of training when the call came in, so the new recruits were able to head out into the field and watch our crew go through an actual response. It gave them a really great example of the principles they’ve been learning about and see those principles in action,” said Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Chief Jim Miller.
The fire broke out in a large single detached garage on Ridge Crescent in the Timber Ridge 1 subdivision. Ten firefighters from the Windermere Fire Department and two engines responded to the call just after 2:30 pm.
“The crew did an amazing job today,” adds Miller. “Not only were they able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures, they were able to save the garage and possibly some of the valuable contents inside.” A boat being stored within the garage sustained significant damage after its tarp caught fire; however, Miller hopes it will be repairable.
While a more detailed investigation will be completed over the next few days, the fire is not suspicious in nature and is believed to be caused by an electrical issue.
