13th Avenue upgrade contract awarded

By Erin Knutson

The District of Invermere awarded MarWest Industries Inc. a $1,896,236 contract for the 13th Avenue Infrastructure Upgrade Project – Phase 1 at Tuesday’s (June 22) council meeting, following a unanimous decision at their first in-house gathering this year.

“District staff will negotiate the final cost of the Phase 1 contract for approximately $1.9 million, which includes applicable taxes, with MarWest and Urban Systems Ltd. to maximize the improvements completed within the award amount,” according to Invermere Chief Administrative Officer Andrew Young.

MarWest is slated to begin construction in Invermere for Phase 1 at the beginning of July.

According to a district staff report, all of the essential works associated with this project must be completed with the funding available.

Construction will include sanitary sewer and water systems upgrades, separated multi-use path improvements, paving, and road realignment as Urban Systems Ltd. oversees daily operations with the support of district staff.

“The project covers a section of work that’s approximately 400 metres along the 13th Avenue right of way to be completed by the end of August – we have a fairly narrow construction window to ensure we’re not disrupting school attendance which will resume in fall,” said Young.

According to Young, traffic will alternate through a one-lane-set-up as construction commences, as he addressed council’s concerns over road conditions when construction begins.

Young was pleased with council’s decision to green light the project, acknowledging support received by the ‘all in favour’ motion.

“Staff is very grateful for your support on this,” said Young to mayor and council.

Mayor Al Miller thanked Young and staff for their dedication.

“We’ve chatted about this a long time, and we know the importance of it – thank you to the staff for all the work you did on this project,” he said.
