Invermere’s 72-year-old Lake Windermere Memorial Community Hall was smashed into rubble yesterday (June 13).

How many pieces of ski equipment or books were sold there? How many judokas learned their craft there? How many kids found common ground and fun there?

How many firefighters’ dances; elections served; couples married; crafts sales held; public hearings heard; special events thrilled; District of Invermere rental fees waived by councils; how much history made – in the old hall that was built in 1947 as a memorial to valley residents who served their country in the two world wars of the last century, at a cost of $10,500.

The old hall become redundant and in the way of any future plans for a central downtown lot following the completion of the multi-million dollar, 17,000-square-foot facility Columbia Valley Centre in September 2017.

“Today the old community hall came down; it was a sad yet exciting event,” the District of Invermere observed on Facebook yesterday.
