Whiteway Segway tours in limbo

A communication SNAFU has derailed the hoped for Segway tours on the Lake Windermere Whiteway.
While Patrick Tolchard and Krista Berg, co-owners of Zipline Adventures, believed they had contacted all the groups that may be concerned about the new adventure opportunity, a mix-up in past and present board members of the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club, which oversees the Whiteway, brought their plans to a halt.
While former members had expressed support for the idea, the current board was not in support of it.
“It was a miscommunication and we understand the decision,” said Tolchard. “We always want to cover all our bases when setting up any activities. It is not and never will be our intention to put people or businesses in this situation. We are disappointed and sorry for all that transpired.”
The Nordic Club concerns are around mixing the motorized Segways with those using the Whiteway on skis or skates.
To that end, the District of Invermere (DOI) council Dec. 11 voted to rescind its approval in principle until a new plan comes forward.
Councillor Ute Juras expressed disappointment that the Segway tours will not happen.
“It is unfortunate how it played out,” said Juras. “I do understand the Nordic Club’s concerns, but on the other hand, it is not really fair to compare (Segways) to quads, etc. Not everyone can ski or skate, or for some even walk the Whiteway.”
While he was initially excited about the venture, Mayor Al Miller said he too understands the Nordic Club’s misgivings, adding Tolchard and Berg may be able to find an alternate route on the lake to implement the tours.
