Petition seeks to lower corridor speed limit
An online petition is asking residents to help encourage provincial authorities to reduce the maximum speed limit on Highway 93/95 from Invermere to Windermere (the corridor) from 90 to 60 km/h.
The petition through Change.org, started by resident Edward Mayor, will be presented to Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Doug Clovechok.
“The current maximum speed limit of 90 km/h has become a huge concern since both sides of the corridor have residential developments,” the petition information notes.
“The current maximum speed limit of 90 km/h is causing a safety issue to pedestrians who want to cross the highway as well as vehicles that need to merge into the highway from their communities. Traffic noise caused by cars, light trucks, and heavy trucks is becoming unbearable to homeowners living near the highway.
“Since highway safety and noise is definitively affecting the quality of life of people living along the corridor, I strongly believe that it is time to request the provincial authorities to drastically reduce Highway 93/95 maximum speed limit from the current 90 km/h to 60 km/h along the corridor.”
The petition author concludes: “Highway 93/95 maximum speed limit at Radium Hot Springs and Fairmont Hot Springs is substantially reduced; why is the highway maximum speed limit between Invermere and Windermere still set at 90 km/h?”
As of this morning (August 21) the petition has 107 signatures.
