Calgary motorcyclist killed in Radium crash

BC RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the circumstances surrounding a now fatal collision that occurred early Tuesday afternoon (August 11) in Radium Hot Springs.

On August 11, at 1:10 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP and emergency medical crews rushed to the scene of a serious multiple vehicle collision on Highway 95 at Prospector Avenue in Radium Hot Springs. Police have determined that southbound traffic along Highway 95 was backed up and at a stand-still.

Preliminary findings suggest that a green Jeep Wrangler collided with a blue Harley Davidson motorcycle, as the driver of the Jeep attempted a left hand turn from Prospector Avenue, into the northbound lanes of the highway, through a gap in the southbound traffic. The motorcycle was travelling northbound on the highway at the time of the collision.

The impact of the collision pushed the Jeep Wrangler into a silver Ford Expedition hauling a trailer, which was stationary in traffic.

Bystanders rushed to provide first aid to the motorcyclist, who sustained serious injuries in the crash. The 48-year-old Calgary man was airlifted by a STARS air ambulance to an Alberta hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Jeep and the Expedition were uninjured in the crash.

The BC Coroners Service has been notified and is also conducting an independent and concurrent fact-finding investigation. Due to the privacy of the deceased under the Coroner’s Act, the man’s identity will not be released publicly.

BC RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services has assumed control of the ongoing investigation into the collision. If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police, or you have dash camera footage of the collision you are asked to call RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-420-4244.
