Much-loved librarian lauded in retirement

By Anne Jardine

The Village of Radium Hot Springs held a retirement party to honour Librarian Jane Jones on Friday, December 14 in the function room Radium Centre’s Public Library.

Dozens of guests listened as Councillor Ron Verboom spoke glowingly of Jane’s 16 years of dedication to the development of library services for the village, with particular appreciation of her involvement in the planning process for the new library and her tireless efforts to prepare and pack the collection for its move from its old location to its beautiful new home.

Moving a library is an enormously detailed task. Jane approached it with great energy and quiet excitement, supervising the packing, unpacking and re-shelving of all the books, and the setting up of the office and computer catalogue and sign-out system.

Traffic increased greatly as the new library got up and running, and Jane has been sharing her enthusiasm with the browsers, the children from Dragonfly Day Care who come regularly for story-time activities, the newly formed Artists’ Guild which meets in the library, and all the happy readers who have flocked to the new facility. Now that the library is firmly established, Jane is looking forward to a well-deserved rest.

In her farewell speech, she thanked the village for all the support she and the library have received over the years. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to work with,” she said. “The council and staff have always responded to every need, both at the old library, and here in this new space. It was a joy to be part of the planning. This is an inviting place – always busy – people love coming here.”

Asked what she has planned for her retirement, Jane replied, “I’m going to stay home and think.”
