Open house coming for Radium Junction improvements

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is inviting people to an open house to provide input for an upcoming improvement project at the intersection of highways 93 and 95.

“Safe roads keep goods moving smoothly and help people spend less time in traffic so they have more quality time with their families,” said François-Philippe Champagne, federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “The Government of Canada is working in partnership with British Columbia to ensure transportation infrastructure provides users with a safe route to and from their homes and contributes to sustainable economic growth.”

The existing four-way stop at the junction of highways 93 and 95 in Radium Hot Springs will be replaced with a roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow through the area.

“This is the main intersection for the community, and for too long it has seen heavy back-ups when traffic volumes are high,” said Claire Trevena, B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Replacing the intersection with a roundabout will keep traffic moving, which will be better for the community.”

The public is welcome to attend the open house on Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Radium Hot Springs Centre, 4865 Stanley St. in Radium Hot Springs.

Ministry staff will be on hand to answer questions and receive input on improving this intersection.

This project is cost-shared, and the federal contribution is part of a $17.9-million suite of projects through the New Building Canada Fund, Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component. The province is providing $7.1 million for this intersection improvement.

After public engagement is complete and the design is finalized, the project will be tendered early in 2020. Construction on the intersection is expected to begin next spring and finish in late 2020.
