RDEK damage reporting page set up, deadline nears

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has set up a simple reporting tool to gain a greater understanding of the scope of damages from the storm event on May 31.

“While there are some larger scale impacts that are being actioned, such as the debris flows and flooding in the Columbia Valley, we know there are also a number of individual impacts to properties as a result of that intense storm,” explained Information Officer Loree Duczek. “We really want to hear from every property owner that sustained damage so that we can better understand the wider scope of the damages and use that information as part of our reporting to the province.”

The province has asked the RDEK to submit a damage assessment report by the end of the week. As a result, the deadline to submit a damage report form is 4 p.m. this Friday, June 19.

To help make the reporting easy for people, the RDEK has set up a reporting form at engage.rdek.bc.ca/damage.

“Property owners can provide their property information and include up to five photos,” added Duczek.

While utilizing the online reporting tool and providing photos is preferred, for those people who do not have access to a computer or the internet, damage reports can be made over the phone via the Emergency Information Line at 250-426-2188 or 1-855-346-2188.

“We want to hear from anyone who sustained damage as a result of the storm. This is solely about getting a good understanding of the magnitude of damage. The more people we hear from, the more complete our report will be,” reiterated Duczek.
